Dimensions of wellness can have a flat tire
Now that we have a comfortable paradigm for wellness, I'd like to throw a monkey wrench into the middle. Don't misunderstand, we fully accept that getting a grip on well-being and complete wellness in our lives needs a paradigm. It needs to be broken down into pieces to get a good (well?) foot in the door. Breaking it down into its components is important and functional.
Now that we're inside though, it's time to acknowledge that humans are not neatly divided into pieces of a pie. If anything we are more like the hologram with the whole pie in every slice! We can't just take our occupational selves to work or our social selves to a fundraiser. If, for example, our emotional wellness is low or our physical wellness is off kilter we are likely to have repercussions at work and the fundraiser. The wheel keeps spinning and changing. As life happens our wheel loses its firmness and nicely sliced pieces. It will sink in some places and expand in others.
Wherever you go, there you are
Growth is uneven and so are challenges. Especially when we are coping with challenges, we may want to put parts of ourselves on hold until life is on an even keel again. Unfortunately for us, that level of compartmentalization is short-lived, if it functions at all.
The truth is we can run, but we can't hide, not from ourselves. We'll find us there waiting and watching, wherever we are. I watched a bird sitting on a car door looking in the mirror and pecking at it. As I got closer the bird flew off with a small sound that I interpreted as something like "I'll be back dude, cause this was my spot."
If that bird returns, guess who'll already be there waiting? Yup, and the battle could continue indefinitely. No matter how many times the bird flies off, the moment it looks in that mirror everything is right there in his face.
We are no different. So if we can't escape ourselves and we have dimensions of wellness that are not doing as well as we want them to, what's the answer? How do we change it?
Anybody?
